10.4. Un Jesse James d’origine irlandaise : NED KELLY
(Edward Kelly, 1855-1880). En 1878, Ned, qui se présente comme un rebelle politique, assassine trois policiers à Stringysbark Creek v. Mansfield, puis devient chef de bande avec son frère Dan, s’illustrant par l’utilisation d’une armure métallique pour ses hold-ups. Il finit pendu à Melbourne le 11 novembre 1880.

La version la plus connue des exploits de Ned Kelly, filmée avec maestria par Tony Richardson en Technicolor à Braidwood (New South Wales) et à Melbourne, avec la vedette du groupe rock des Rolling Stones. Un début au réalisme documentaire, puis une épopée westernienne aux connotations sociopolitiques illustrant comment l’illégalité répond à l’injustice (la mère de Ned, victime d’avocats véreux, est envoyée en prison). Un échec au box-office. Nota bene: en 1962/63, Karel Reisz et le scénariste David Storey avaient mis en chantier un *"Ned Kelly" (GB, Redford Films) avec Albert Finney dans le rôle-titre. Projet inachevé. |
